Ojulari Steps In as NNPCL Boss Amid High Hopes and Lingering Challenges

The appointment of Ahmadu Kida as Non-Executive Chairman and Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the new Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL is widely viewed as a step in the right direction. Public expectations are high, particularly following the controversial removal of the fuel subsidy—a policy shift that led to increased fuel prices without corresponding improvement in product availability.
Industry observers have consistently criticized the corporation’s inability to optimize refinery operations, which continues to drain Nigeria’s foreign reserves due to persistent reliance on fuel imports. There is now a renewed demand for NNPCL to significantly ramp up its refining capacity and production efficiency.
With Ojulari at the helm, stakeholders are hopeful that the company will pursue clear production targets: increasing crude oil output to two million barrels per day by 2027 and three million by 2030, while also boosting gas production to eight billion cubic feet per day by 2027 and ten billion by 2030. Ojulari’s rich background—spanning roles such as MD of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, Chairman of BAT Advisory and Energy Company, and EVP/COO of Renaissance Africa Energy—positions him well for this task. However, he must navigate political and institutional challenges while upholding national interest as his primary focus.
The burden of expectation is heavy. Yet, if Ojulari can draw on his deep industry experience and prioritize efficient, transparent governance, he could very well lead NNPCL into a new era of productivity and national pride.

The Bangbola Oyewo family of the Ese-Ola Royal House remembered him as a beloved family man, traditional leader, and an inspiration to generations of theatre practitioners.
