Tricycle Operators in Aba Demand Registration, Protest State Government’s Refusal

Published

on

Commercial tricycle operators in Aba, the economic hub of Abia State, took to the streets to protest the state government’s refusal to register their association. The protest, organized by the Real Keke Operators Association Abia-State (REKOAA), saw operators marching through Aba’s major streets, voicing their dissatisfaction with the state Ministry of Transport.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The protesters, who carried placards displaying various messages, accused the Ministry of Transport and Works Commissioner officials of conspiring to deny them the right to operate as a registered association. They argued that the refusal to register REKOAA violated their constitutional right to freedom of association.

Sunday Okenwa, the spokesperson for REKOAA, clarified that the protest was not sponsored by any external group, but was driven by the operators’ concerns. He praised Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti for his significant infrastructural developments in Abia, including the restoration of key roads like the Port Harcourt road in Aba. He commended Otti for his leadership and pledged full support for his re-election bid in 2027.

Okenwa also lauded Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, the state’s Commissioner for Transport, for his diligent work in improving the state’s transportation sector. However, the group’s core issue remained the refusal to recognize REKOAA as an officially registered tricycle association, despite the Ministry’s prior certification.

According to Okenwa, the Ministry of Transport had earlier approved REKOAA’s registration with a Certificate of Registration (No: MOT/T/063), but state officials are now backing the ASTOPU (Abia State Tricycle Operators Union of Nigeria), demanding that REKOAA members disband and join them under outdated practices, including multiple taxation.

The protesters called on Governor Otti to intervene, ensuring that ASTOPU respects REKOAA’s rights and that the registration issue is resolved. They warned that the continued denial of registration would create financial hardships for the operators, as it would hinder their ability to generate revenue and comply with necessary government fees.

The protest also raised concerns about the tactics being used by ASTOPU, which has allegedly been pressuring operators with police harassment to force them into membership, a move Okenwa described as an abuse of power. The operators are calling for a fair and transparent regulatory process that ensures their rights are protected.

FCT Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Demands.

Published

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to commence an indefinite strike from Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The union also directed parents and guardians to keep their children at home until further notice, citing unresolved welfare concerns and what it described as government inaction.

This followed a communiqué issued after an emergency SWEC meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, over the weekend and signed by the state leadership of the union.

Teachers were instructed to fully comply with the strike directive and await further instructions from the union leadership, as the industrial action remains in force until their demands are addressed.

According to the communiqué, the strike became necessary after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which elapsed without a satisfactory response.

The union recalled that although previous interventions led to the suspension of an earlier strike, several key issues affecting teachers’ welfare were still unresolved.

It also expressed concern that a committee set up to address outstanding entitlements submitted its report in August 2025, but the findings have not been made public or implemented.

While acknowledging the payment of the new minimum wage and some salary arrears, the union insisted that major concerns remain unattended.

The NUT further demanded reforms in promotion processes and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise.

After what it described as unsuccessful engagements and expired deadlines, the union declared that all teachers in the FCT will remain on strike indefinitely until their demands are met.
