Governor Diri Urges Peace Amid Rising Tensions Over Planned Political Rally in Bayelsa
Bayelsa State is experiencing heightened tensions ahead of a planned rally organized by ‘The New Associates,’ led by George Turnah, the South-South Zonal Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The event, set for April 12, 2025, was initially expected to feature Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This caused significant unrest in the predominantly Ijaw-speaking state, sparking concerns among residents.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The controversy intensified after the organizers released a flyer featuring prominent political figures such as President Bola Tinubu, Wike, Minister of State for Petroleum Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, and Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which was seen as an attempt to calm rising anxieties.
Governor Douye Diri has strongly opposed the rally, warning that it could import political instability from neighboring Rivers State into Bayelsa. In a statement, he condemned any actions that could provoke unrest, emphasizing that the state would not tolerate any disturbances.
“We have received threats from our sister state. The political unrest there is encroaching upon us, and we will not allow such tensions to spill over into Bayelsa,” Diri said. He further urged security forces to remain vigilant and appealed to parents and community leaders to discourage their children from being used to stir up trouble.
In response, security agencies in Bayelsa conducted patrols across Yenagoa, signaling their readiness to ensure safety and order during the upcoming rally.
Despite the warnings, rally organizers, including Turnah, have reiterated their commitment to holding a peaceful event. Turnah stated that the rally was intended to thank President Tinubu and Nyesom Wike for appointing Bayelsa indigenes to key governmental roles. He reassured the public that the event would feature traditional Ijaw performances, with access restricted to invited guests only to ensure security.
However, former Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) leader Alfred Kemepado criticized the timing of the rally, citing recent inflammatory remarks made by Wike and the potential for the event to exacerbate tensions, especially in light of the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State. Kemepado dismissed claims that the rally was a gesture of gratitude, suggesting that it was driven by political motives rather than goodwill.
While the rally organizers have garnered support from some within the PDP, concerns remain over potential clashes between opposing factions. The state government and security agencies are on high alert, determined to maintain peace as the rally date approaches.
Governor Diri reiterated his commitment to upholding the constitution and ensuring that the state’s security is not compromised, stating that while Bayelsa respects citizens’ rights, peace must be prioritized.
