This appeal was contained in a communiqué released at the conclusion of a three-day leadership workshop for Tiv traditional leaders. In the document, the council urged their Jukun counterparts to embrace dialogue in order to foster mutual understanding and lasting peace.
The communiqué, signed by the council’s Chairman, Chief Dr. David Gbaa Tela, and Secretary, Zaki Targema Ukange, lauded Governor Agbu Kefas for his inclusive governance, noting his fair appointment of Tiv individuals into prominent roles in the state government. The council praised this as a reflection of the governor’s dedication to equity and social justice.
Furthermore, the Tiv leaders appealed to the state government to expedite the resettlement of displaced Tiv communities and fast-track infrastructural development in Tiv-dominated areas. They also advocated for the formal recognition of a Tiv Central Traditional Leadership structure, subject to the state’s discretion.
The council emphasized the need for traditional rulers to enhance their leadership skills, uphold accountability and integrity, and apply emotional intelligence in managing communal affairs. They also encouraged the integration of modern technology to improve administrative efficiency and communication, while stressing the importance of balancing family roles to avoid conflict of interest.
Highlighting unity and loyalty, the council called on all Tiv people in Taraba to support the legitimate traditional leadership. They also firmly disassociated themselves from any individuals claiming leadership positions outside the established council structure.
