Otti Denies Authorizing ESN to Protect Farmers Amid Fulani Herdsmen Crisis

The clarification came following online rumours suggesting that the state government had engaged ESN operatives—reportedly linked with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)—to defend local farmers and expel herders from their lands due to perceived inaction by federal security agencies.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti described the reports as “false, malicious, and misleading.” Ekeoma further stated that such fabrications are intended to stir public unrest and political tension.
“The attention of the Abia State Government has been drawn to a post by an anonymous blogger falsely alleging that Governor Alex Otti approved the use of ESN to confront Fulani herders and protect farmers,” Ekeoma noted. “This claim is completely unfounded and does not represent the policies or actions of this administration.”
He emphasized that the state government has full confidence in Nigeria’s legitimate security agencies and has made significant investments in improving local security through a coordinated effort. This led to the creation of “Operation Crush,” a multi-agency security task force responsible for combating criminal activities across Abia.
According to Ekeoma, the task force has achieved notable success in addressing incidents of kidnapping and robbery, reinforcing the state’s dedication to lawful and structured security efforts.
Ekeoma also warned those spreading such misinformation for political gain, stating that any attempt to endanger public peace or instigate fear among citizens will not go unpunished.
“Those inciting fear and violence for political purposes should be ready to face legal consequences when apprehended,” he added.
Governor Otti reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to maintaining peace, supporting farmers, and protecting the lives and property of all residents of Abia State—strictly through legal and constitutional channels.
