Preliminary reports indicate that despite being in a critical condition, the expectant mother was not given urgent care, leading to her unfortunate death. Lagos State’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the grieving family on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the state’s healthcare sector.
A joint investigative panel has been set up by the state government, consisting of officials from the Ministry of Health and the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA). This panel will examine the registration status of the involved facilities, compliance with regulatory guidelines, and any violations of emergency care protocols.
Prof. Abayomi emphasized that healthcare providers in Lagos, both public and private, are legally required to provide emergency medical services without delay, regardless of financial constraints. The commissioner further warned that any healthcare facility found violating these standards would face severe legal and regulatory penalties.
To prevent similar incidents, the state government also plans to enhance its oversight of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) and private health facilities, especially unregistered nursing homes. Residents have been encouraged to seek care only from HEFAMAA-accredited providers and report any facilities operating outside of their licensed scope.
