Nigeria’s total public debt surged by 48.5% year-on-year, reaching N144.67 trillion ($94.23 billion) in 2024, up from N97.34 trillion ($108.23 billion) recorded in 2023, according to the latest report from the Debt Management Office (DMO).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The debt profile is made up of external debt amounting to N70.29 trillion ($45.78 billion) and domestic debt of N74.38 trillion ($48.44 billion). Servicing of the external debt cost the country $4.66 million.

The report reveals that Nigeria’s external debt increased sharply by 83.89% year-on-year, rising from N38.22 trillion ($42.5 billion) in 2023. Meanwhile, domestic debt grew by 25.7% from N59.12 trillion ($65.73 billion) during the same period.

Additionally, the Federal Government’s share of domestic debt rose by 32%, hitting N70.41 trillion in 2024 from N53.26 trillion in 2023. However, domestic debt owed by states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) declined by 32%, dropping to N3.97 trillion from N5.86 trillion in 2023.

The significant rise in public debt, particularly external obligations, is largely attributed to exchange rate fluctuations and shifts in global economic conditions. The continuous depreciation of the naira poses a growing risk, potentially increasing the cost of foreign debt servicing and exerting additional pressure on the nation’s financial stability.
