Chelle Outlines Nigeria Path To 2026 World Cup Qualification

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Sekhou Chelle, remains confident that Nigeria can still secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a challenging start to the qualification campaign.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While the team has struggled in earlier matches—failing to secure a win in their first four qualifiers—Chelle has shifted focus to upcoming fixtures, laying out a clear strategy to get the Super Eagles back on track.

Since taking over, the Malian tactician has reignited hope by leading Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Rwanda. However, a recent draw against Zimbabwe has left the team six points behind group leaders, South Africa. With Bafana Bafana aiming for their first World Cup appearance since 2010, the road ahead remains steep for the Super Eagles.

“Winning in South Africa is Non-Negotiable” – Chelle

Chelle emphasized that the remaining matches are now must-win encounters. In particular, he identified the away fixture against South Africa as a decisive point in the qualification race.

“We have to win in South Africa—it’s not optional. But for now, our immediate priority is Rwanda at home in Uyo,” Chelle stated during an interview with Brila FM.

He stressed the importance of gaining maximum points in every remaining fixture while banking on rivals to drop points in the process.

Key Fixtures and Preparation Plans

Nigeria’s next home match will be against Rwanda on September 3 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Just three days later, the team will travel to face South Africa in a pivotal away match.

To bolster preparations, several international friendlies are being planned ahead of the September qualifiers. Reports indicate Nigeria may participate in the Unity Cup tournament in June, featuring Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. Additionally, a friendly against FIFA-sanctioned Russia is also under consideration, although the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to officially confirm the fixtures.

Chelle remains focused on rallying the team and maximizing every opportunity, believing qualification is still within reach if Nigeria finishes strong in the remaining matches

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
