President Tinubu Restructures NNPCL Leadership: Reasons Behind the Dismissal of Mele Kyari and Board Members

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu has recently made significant changes to the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) by dismissing Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer, along with other board members. The decision, which has sparked widespread reactions, was attributed to concerns regarding the board’s performance and the urgent need for leadership that could address the nation’s crude oil and gas production challenges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to sources within the presidency, the leadership change was driven by the need to implement reforms aimed at revitalizing the oil sector. The previous board, appointed in November 2023, was perceived as lacking the capacity to meet the administration’s ambitious targets, including increasing daily crude oil production to three million barrels by 2030 and raising gas output to 10 billion cubic meters.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirmed the restructuring, announcing that Bashir Ojulari would assume the role of Group Chief Executive Officer from April 2, 2025. The newly reconstituted board, which includes Musa Ahmadu-Kida as the non-executive chairman, comprises industry experts from various government ministries and geopolitical zones.

The administration has outlined clear performance expectations for the new leadership, including the review of existing oil blocks, optimization of underperforming assets, and substantial progress in crude oil and gas production. Additionally, the NNPCL has been tasked with enhancing the domestic refining capacity to process at least 200,000 barrels per day by 2027, scaling up to 500,000 barrels per day by 2030.

The new leadership, described as highly competent and results-oriented, is expected to introduce a strategic approach to managing Nigeria’s oil assets, focusing on efficiency and productivity to meet the President’s vision for the sector.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
