The politician particularly condemned the situation in Rivers State, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency. Obi argued that the political unrest in Rivers was a result of individuals making the state ungovernable for their own political gains, which ultimately undermined the country’s fragile democracy.

Obi also highlighted Nigeria’s lack of democratic freedoms, noting the absence of a functional legislature and an independent judiciary, and pointing out that many citizens are being detained for expressing their views. He personally expressed experiencing harassment on a daily basis.
