Trans Niger Pipeline Fully Restored After Explosion; Supply to Bonny Terminal Resumes
The Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP), which was recently damaged by an explosion, has now been fully restored, with normal supplies to the Bonny oil terminal resuming. PINL acknowledged the crucial role played by host communities in the affected regions of Abia, Imo, and Rivers States, whose cooperation expedited the repair efforts and ensured the pipeline’s swift return to operation.
During a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday, PINL’s Community Relations Consultant, Akpos Meze, expressed gratitude for the assistance from the local communities, highlighting the importance of ongoing engagement with the 215 communities surrounding the Trans Niger Pipeline. Meze also outlined initiatives aimed at empowering these communities, such as skills acquisition programs, scholarships, and youth empowerment schemes, which are designed to provide sustainable opportunities for the future.
Additionally, Meze revealed that in the coming month, PINL will conduct medical outreach programs to assist indigent residents who lack access to healthcare, as well as provide piped water to select host communities, including the Asarama community in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The host communities have expressed their appreciation for PINL’s efforts to secure the pipelines and praised the company for its consistent engagement, which has contributed to a peaceful environment and local empowerment.
The traditional ruler of Eleme Kingdom, King Philip Obelle, spoke at the meeting, acknowledging the importance of PINL’s efforts but also highlighting the environmental challenges faced by the host communities due to oil exploration. Obelle called for increased government action to address the harmful effects of oil pollution, such as acid rain and deteriorating infrastructure in the region.
Dr. Kennedy West, the President of the Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationalities in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), also urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to fulfill its obligations under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to support the host communities. He stressed the need for the legal provisions designed to assist these communities to be fully implemented.
