In 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) achieved unprecedented milestones in asset forfeiture, prosecution, and conviction, marking the most successful year in its 22-year history. The EFCC recorded an impressive 4,111 convictions, following an astounding 12,928 investigated cases, of which 5,083 were brought to court. Some of the arrests and forfeitures were especially notable. On December 10, 2024, the commission apprehended a syndicate of 792 cryptocurrency investment and romance fraudsters in Lagos, uncovering an operation involving foreign masterminds. Over 400 computers, 500 SIM cards, and other significant cybercrime tools were seized.

Asset recovery reached new heights in 2024, with the EFCC securing a forfeiture order for a vast property in Abuja, covering over 150,000 sqm and containing 753 duplexes. The commission’s cash recovery amounted to N364.6 billion and $214.5 million in foreign currencies, along with over 13 Bitcoins and several other digital assets.

The EFCC’s anti-corruption efforts also led to notable cases, including the final forfeiture of assets linked to individuals such as Anthony Hassan, and the recovery of numerous vehicles, electronics, land parcels, and shares. The commission also launched a special task force to combat naira abuse and the dollarisation of the economy, achieving notable successes in securing convictions, including high-profile individuals like Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest.

In terms of fraud prevention, the EFCC introduced multiple innovative measures, such as the reintroduction of the Inter-faith Manual to combat corruption, the establishment of a Cybercrime Rapid Response Centre, and the creation of a Department of Fraud Risk Assessment. These initiatives have contributed to strengthening the commission’s prevention strategies.

The EFCC’s enforcement efforts also saw the investigation and prosecution of high-profile figures, including former governors and ministers, in cases involving billions of naira and dollars in alleged fraud. These cases, which include former governors Abdulfatah Ahmed and Willie Obiano, as well as former Minister Hadi Sirika, demonstrate the EFCC’s relentless pursuit of justice in high-profile financial crime cases.

The year also saw the inauguration of EFCC Radio 97.3FM, a first in anti-corruption advocacy, and the establishment of the Cybercrime Research Centre, aimed at advancing research and capacity building to combat cybercrimes in Nigeria. These developments reflect the EFCC’s ongoing commitment to combating corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.

With the commission expanding its reach through new directorates and continued focus on cutting-edge anti-corruption strategies, the EFCC is poised to continue its critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s financial integrity.
