Bill to Impose Age Limit on Nigerian Presidential Candidates Sparks Heated Debate
A new bill under consideration in the Nigerian House of Representatives has generated widespread debate, proposing that individuals over 60 years old be disqualified from contesting for the presidency or governorship in the 2027 elections. The bill, introduced by Ikenga Ugochinyere, a lawmaker from Imo State, was passed for a second reading on Thursday. If enacted, the bill would affect prominent figures such as President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, as they all surpass the age limit.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999,” seeks to impose new age qualifications for candidates running for president and governor, stipulating that they must be no older than 60 years at the time of contesting for these offices. It also includes educational requirements, ensuring candidates possess at least a Bachelor’s degree.
While the bill has found support among Nigeria’s youth, who feel underrepresented in politics, it has also faced significant opposition. Critics argue that focusing on age may distract from the need for broader electoral reforms. Osita Okechukwu, a former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria and APC chieftain, stressed the importance of electoral reforms over age restrictions. Omoyele Sowore, the 54-year-old presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, expressed skepticism about the bill’s chances, labeling it as discriminatory and unlikely to pass.
Meanwhile, Terzulum Ukpanya, a former Labour Party candidate, emphasized that only the youth could bring about meaningful change in Nigeria’s governance, criticizing the self-interest and corruption of older politicians. The age limit bill continues to fuel a contentious debate about the future of Nigerian leadership and the role of the country’s aging political elite.
