2027 Elections: SDP’s Adewole Adebayo Open to Stepping Down for a Better Candidate
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Adewole Adebayo, has expressed his willingness to relinquish his presidential ambition in the 2027 elections if a more suitable candidate emerges as the party’s flag bearer.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Adebayo made this declaration during the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political program aired on Channels Television.
“Everyone is aware that I have an aspiration. I am actively pursuing it, but ultimately, God is the architect of the future; we cannot predict who will be present in 2027. It is my sincere prayer that if there is a person deemed better equipped by God to address Nigeria’s challenges, my ambition should not hinder that individual. We aim for a functional country, and that remains our primary focus,” Adebayo stated.
He affirmed that the SDP would put forward a candidate capable of garnering nationwide support and presenting a viable alternative to unseat the incumbent President, Bola Tinubu, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the next presidential election.
Adebayo also emphasized that the SDP would avoid dividing the nation along the sensitive lines of religion and ethnicity. According to him, what was once a simple discussion concerning religion and ethnicity has now become increasingly volatile. As a result, the SDP will not exploit these divides to segment the populace. Instead, he envisioned a scenario where the party’s candidate choice would elicit widespread approval from Nigerians, even outside the SDP’s base.
Talks of an inter-party alliance have intensified ahead of the 2027 elections, culminating on March 20, 2025, when key opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, announced a coalition to challenge Tinubu’s administration, which has faced criticism for alleged economic mismanagement and record-high inflation.
The coalition, leveraging the significant number of votes obtained by Atiku and Obi in the previous election, seeks to capitalize on the dissatisfaction with the current administration. In the 2023 elections, Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party’s Obi collectively garnered over 12 million votes, surpassing the vote count of Tinubu, who was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
With internal conflicts plaguing the PDP and LP, alongside reports of dissatisfaction among some APC members, the SDP has become an attractive option for politicians from the three parties. Notably, Nasir El-Rufai and his associates have already joined the SDP, while speculations about Atiku and Obi’s potential defection to the party continue to circulate, though neither has officially confirmed such intentions.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
