Rivers Crisis Deepens: Opobo Chiefs Slam Suspension of Fubara, Warn Against Undermining Democracy
The Opobo Council of Chiefs, kinsmen of suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has strongly condemned the declaration of emergency rule in the state, describing the suspension of Fubara as a severe violation of democratic principles. Speaking at an emergency stakeholders’ congress of the Ijaw National Congress in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Edwin Brown, the Vice Chairman of the Opobo Chiefs, argued that the suspension of Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly was a direct assault on democracy. Brown stressed that such actions undermined the will of the electorate and posed a major threat to the state’s political harmony.
He criticized the suspension as a constitutional violation, pointing out that while the Nigerian Constitution allows the president to declare a state of emergency, it does not authorize the suspension of democratically elected officials. The proper procedure for removing a governor, he noted, is outlined in Section 188 of the Constitution, requiring a legislative process rather than unilateral executive action.
Brown warned that this unconstitutional move could have long-lasting consequences, dismantling democratic structures and eroding public trust in Nigeria’s political system. He emphasized that the struggle for democracy in Rivers State was about more than Fubara’s suspension—it was a broader fight for the rights of all citizens who participated in the electoral process.
Additionally, Brown highlighted the historical struggle of the Ijaw people for greater representation and political inclusion, expressing frustration that the federal government’s decision undermines decades of efforts to secure fair governance for the Ijaw community. He called for unity among Ijaw leaders and communities, urging them to defend their rights and identity against divisive actions.
