Onanuga Claims Rivers Would Have Been in Bloodshed If Tinubu Didn’t Act
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has defended the president’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. This declaration, made on March 18, 2025, led to the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state’s House of Assembly due to ongoing political turmoil.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview on ARISE Television’s “Prime Time,” Onanuga emphasized that the intervention was necessary to prevent a full-blown crisis. He argued that had Tinubu not taken action, the state legislature was on the verge of impeaching Governor Fubara, which could have resulted in violent clashes and bloodshed.
“Sometimes, Nigerians respond to issues knee-jerk; it is not an insult but the reality in our country. If President Tinubu had not intervened in Rivers, things could have been much worse by now,” Onanuga said.
He highlighted the significance of Rivers State, referring to it as “the oxygen” of the country due to its vital role in oil production and the national economy. Onanuga also clarified that the state of emergency was a suspension, not a removal, intended for the good of the nation.
“Rivers State harbors our oil resources, oil, and gas. Most of our money comes from that state, so no leader would want to wait for the state to burn down before acting,” he added, asserting that the president’s actions were taken to avert further chaos.
