Despite African powerhouses like Al Ahly of Egypt and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa securing spots, Nigerian clubs, including the prestigious Enyimba International of Aba, failed to qualify. Enyimba, the only Nigerian club to have previously won the CAF Champions League, lost out after a 3-0 defeat to Zamalek in the qualifiers.
This exclusion highlights the persistent struggles Nigerian football faces, including poor local league organization, inconsistent player contracts, and a lack of professional management in club administration. Mozez Praiz, a sports broadcaster, stressed the importance of professionalism and better management for Nigerian football to compete on the global stage. He pointed out that the lack of infrastructure, inadequate funding, and poor management continue to hinder Nigerian football’s growth.
While Nigerian football clubs miss the chance to compete for the £97 million prize, the failure to qualify also means missing out on a significant global branding opportunity. If Nigerian clubs can address these fundamental issues, there is hope for future participation in such globally recognized tournaments.
