Eleanor Adarelegebe, Chief Financial Officer of Seplat Energy, delivered a keynote address addressing the gender disparity in STEM, especially in the oil and gas sector, where women hold only 15% of junior-level positions, with fewer in leadership roles. She emphasized Seplat’s proactive initiatives, including mentorship and sponsorship programs that support women at various career stages. She proudly noted that Seplat now has five women on its 14-member board and four women in its senior management team, reflecting the success of these initiatives.
Adarelegebe called for collective action to ensure inclusivity and innovation in the industry, urging leaders—both male and female—to support the drive for gender diversity in STEM. She stressed the importance of overcoming cultural barriers and creating an enabling environment for women to succeed.
During a panel session, Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy, highlighted the need for early encouragement of young girls to pursue STEM education and the importance of visible female role models. Afe also stressed the value of male allyship in leadership spaces to promote inclusivity. She showcased several of Seplat’s initiatives, such as the Seplat Women Awesome Network, a mentorship platform for women, and a 40% female participation target for university undergraduates with outstanding academic records.
Additionally, Afe shared Seplat’s success in empowering over 1,300 educators through the Seplat Teachers’ Empowerment Programme, with 60% of beneficiaries being women from Delta and Edo states. She concluded by celebrating the milestone appointment of Seplat’s first female Managing Director for its Eastern Asset.
Seplat Energy’s commitment to gender equity continues to pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse STEM industry.
