Nigeria’s Judiciary Facing Blackmail, Shettima Laments
Vice President Kashim Shettima has raised concerns about blackmail targeting Nigeria’s judiciary, urging it to avoid manipulating justice for narrow interests. He warned that the judiciary must not be swayed by agents of anarchy and should uphold the law without compromise. “Laws are not mere technicalities; they are the scaffolding of civilization,” he stated, stressing that any erosion of the justice system would undermine the country’s foundation. He also condemned the notion that justice is determined by the loudest voices, acknowledging the judiciary for its commitment to fairness, as demonstrated by its affirmation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electoral mandate despite political pressures.
Shettima called for judges and legal practitioners to stand firm against societal divisions and be steadfast in their duty as “custodians of justice.” He praised the judiciary for rejecting external influences and emphasized that true justice must be accessible to everyone, not just the powerful.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, also spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of ethical practice within the legal profession. Former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and other legal luminaries underscored the role of the Body of Benchers in ensuring the integrity of the legal profession.
Shettima concluded by reiterating President Tinubu’s commitment to fostering cooperation between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, ensuring that justice remains impartial and beyond political manipulation.
