House of Representatives Advances Bill to Set Age Limit for Presidential, Gubernatorial Candidates

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to revise eligibility criteria for these key political positions. According to the bill, candidates for the presidency and governorship must not exceed 60 years of age at the time of election. Additionally, it mandates that aspirants hold at least a Bachelor’s degree.
The proposed amendment specifically targets Section 131 of the Constitution, which outlines the qualifications for presidential candidates, and Section 177, which governs gubernatorial eligibility.

Alongside the age restriction bill, the House also advanced several other key bills for second reading, including:
- Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Bill – Sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Rep. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, this bill seeks to upgrade Alvan Ikoku College of Education in Imo State to a federal university to enhance educational standards.

- Reserved Seats for Women in National and State Assemblies Bill – Sponsored by Rep. Kafilat Ogbara, the bill proposes designated seats for women in legislative bodies to advance gender equality.
Judicial Reform Proposals
The House also considered two judicial reform bills:
- Timelines for Justice Administration Bill – Sponsored by Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, this bill aims to expedite judicial processes and reduce delays in the legal system.
- Increase in Supreme Court & Court of Appeal Justices Bill – Sponsored by Rep. Bello Kaoje, this proposal seeks to increase the number of justices in these courts to enhance judicial efficiency.

Additionally, the House deliberated on bills proposing the creation of new states, including Wan State in the North Central region and Gobir State in the Northwest.
