Niger State APC Secretariat Destroyed Amid Protest Over Local Elections....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Tensions flared in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State on Wednesday as enraged youths vandalized the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat, protesting the alleged imposition of the incumbent chairman, Ilyasu Zakari, as the party’s consensus candidate for the upcoming local government elections.

According to eyewitness reports, the protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with Zakari’s leadership, citing a lack of tangible development in the area under his administration. As the APC consensus process unfolded, frustration grew among the youths, who vocally rejected Zakari’s nomination, chanting “bana so,” meaning “we do not agree.”

In an escalated display of anger, the demonstrators dismantled the iron rods supporting the APC secretariat’s roof, causing it to collapse. A protester, speaking anonymously, declared, “This is what happens when leaders attempt to impose candidates on the people.”

The destruction occurred despite the presence of police officers, who, according to reports, did not intervene to prevent the vandalism. This inaction has raised concerns about law enforcement’s role in maintaining order during political demonstrations.

Meanwhile, in a significant political development, Munya Local Government Area has recorded its first female consensus chairmanship candidate. Fatima Usman secured the APC ticket, marking a notable advancement for women’s representation in local governance in Niger State.

Additionally, reports indicate that several incumbent local government chairmen failed to secure the party’s consensus nomination, stirring further dissatisfaction among party members and the electorate as the APC navigates its candidate selection process ahead of the elections.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
