Tinubu May Extend Emergency Rule to More States, Odeyemi Warns Governors

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Diran Odeyemi, has urged state governors to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in an interview with News Central on Monday, Odeyemi expressed concerns that the move could be part of a broader strategy to secure political dominance ahead of the 2027 elections. His warning follows a similar caution by Anabs Sara-Igbe, former spokesman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), who advised opposition governors and lawmakers to remain vigilant.

Odeyemi argued that there was no substantial justification for the emergency rule in Rivers State, suggesting that it was a tactical move to consolidate power in key states. He pointed out that the recent call by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a similar declaration in Osun State further exposed the party’s intentions.

“Politicians at the presidency often have their sights set on three strategic states—Lagos, Rivers, and Kano—due to their significant voter turnout and economic influence,” Odeyemi stated. “President Tinubu appears to be leveraging minor incidents in Rivers as a pretext to assume control. Governors and other stakeholders are right to challenge this move, as there is no clear justification for it.”

He further criticized Tinubu’s stance, recalling that during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, he strongly opposed emergency rule declarations.

“As a governor, Tinubu vehemently condemned emergency rule, yet as president, he is now implementing the very measures he once resisted,” Odeyemi noted. “His administration has begun with Rivers, and now APC members in Osun are calling for the same under the guise of addressing minor communal clashes.”

Odeyemi stressed the importance of legally contesting the emergency rule to prevent its potential misuse in other states.

“If Rivers’ situation is allowed to stand, other states may soon face similar interventions over minor security concerns. It is crucial for governors and legal experts to challenge this in court and test the constitutional limits of the president’s power to declare emergency rule.”

His remarks come amid growing debates on the political implications of Tinubu’s actions, with opposition figures warning that such moves could undermine democratic governance and state autonomy.
