Ex-Minister Calls for State of Emergency in Osun, Labels Governor Adeleke Incompetent

A former Minister of Police Affairs, Oyewale Adesiyan, has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Osun State, citing political instability and governance challenges. According to Nivo News reports, the state has been grappling with a series of crises, including political turmoil and communal clashes. “As an observer of recent developments in Osun, it is evident that law and order have deteriorated. From the unresolved local government crisis—where the governor disregarded a Court of Appeal ruling—to violent conflicts leading to loss of lives, the state is in dire need of intervention,” Adesiyan stated.

The former minister further criticized Governor Ademola Adeleke, alleging that his failure to manage the state’s challenges has contributed to escalating tensions. He warned that continued disobedience of judicial orders and governance lapses could lead to further anarchy.

“Incompetent leadership has left Osun in a fragile state. Given the ongoing unrest and the inability of the governor to restore peace, invoking constitutional provisions to stabilize the state is the best course of action,” he added.

Adesiyan also lamented the loss of lives in both the local government crisis and recent communal clashes, emphasizing the need for decisive action to prevent further bloodshed and displacement of residents.

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
