House Of Reps Declares War On Homicide, Femicide – Seeks Urgent Reforms

During Tuesday’s plenary, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, the lawmaker representing Andoni/Opobo–Nkoro Federal Constituency in Rivers State, alongside three other legislators, moved a motion raising concerns over the alarming rise in violent crimes, particularly against women and girls.
Abiante emphasized that the right to life is a fundamental human right enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, yet recent incidents indicate a disturbing surge in murder, manslaughter, and other violent crimes.
He stated, “Femicide—the deliberate killing of women and girls due to their gender—has become a pressing issue, with multiple cases reported in recent years.”
Call for Swift Judicial Intervention
Following the adoption of the motion, Naija News reports that the House urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to establish special court divisions at all levels to ensure the prompt trial of homicide and femicide cases.
“Justice delayed is justice denied. Our judicial system must respond swiftly to these atrocious crimes,” Abiante stressed.
The resolution demands immediate action to safeguard lives and ensure justice for victims, as lawmakers pledged to continue pushing for policies that uphold the rights and dignity of every Nigerian.
