In a statement to Nivo News, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, shared that IGP Egbetokun offered heartfelt condolences to the government and residents of Niger State in response to the tragic incident that took place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Niger State.

Nivo News recalls that this tragic incident occurred when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, resulting in the loss of over 73 lives and numerous injuries, along with the destruction of several shops and property. In response, the IGP emphasized the critical need for strict adherence to safety protocols on roads, firmly warning against negligence and disregard for regulations that can lead to such devastating incidents.

He subsequently directed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies, ensuring strict compliance and enforcement of established protocols and traffic regulations on highways.

IGP Egbetokun further urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and follow traffic rules to prevent future tragedies.

According to the Village Head of Matuak Giwa, Simon Ayuba, the herdsman was seeking shelter from the rain with his cattle when the fatal lightning strike occurred, killing both the herder and his cows instantly.

Mallam Tanko Isiyaka, the Ardo of Bondon District, confirmed that the deceased herdsman hailed from Bauchi State, and described the incident as a shocking and tragic event for the local community.
