  • A heavy 4-1 defeat to Manchester City, marking their ninth loss in 20 league matches, leaves West Ham in 14th place, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

In a statement on Wednesday, January 8, West Ham expressed their disappointment, stating, “The first half of the 2024/25 season has not met the club’s ambitions. This decision reflects our commitment to aligning with our objectives.”

The club also announced the departure of Lopetegui’s backroom staff, including assistant Pablo Sanz, head of performance Oscar Caro, head analyst Juan Vicente Peinado, fitness coach Borja De Alba, and technical coach Edu Rubio.

The board extended their gratitude to Lopetegui and his team for their contributions and wished them success in future endeavors. They confirmed that the search for a new manager is underway.

Among the candidates under consideration are former AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca and ex-Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier, currently managing Al Duhail in the Saudi Pro League. However, Graham Potter is widely regarded as the leading contender.

West Ham’s next challenge is an FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa on Friday. Despite recent struggles, including a 5-1 Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool, the team showed resilience with an unbeaten streak of four games before their loss to Manchester City, securing key victories over Wolves and Southampton.

Lopetegui had invested approximately £125 million in the summer transfer window, aiming to strengthen the squad. However, the underwhelming start to the season has highlighted the need for a new strategic direction.

West Ham previously enjoyed success under David Moyes, achieving a Europa League quarter-final berth and winning the Europa Conference League. However, recent performances have underscored the club’s need for a fresh approach to meet their long-term aspirations
