Obasanjo Accuses NNPCL Of Misleading Nigerians, Afenifere And CUPP Support His Stance
Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) have expressed their backing for former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his response to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) following its invitation for him to tour the Port Harcourt Refinery.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The invitation was issued after Obasanjo’s interview with Channels Television, where he referred to advice from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which raised concerns about the refinery’s inefficiency. SPDC had also indicated corruption might be hindering the refinery’s performance. Obasanjo further accused NNPCL of misleading Nigerians regarding the state of the refinery.
In a statement from Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president called the invitation disrespectful to both him and his office, as he had not received any formal invitation from NNPCL by January 2, 2024.
Sola Ebiseni, Secretary-General of Afenifere, criticized the NNPCL for inviting Obasanjo through newspaper ads, despite his valid remarks on the mismanagement of Nigeria’s refineries. Ebiseni denounced the invitation as arrogant, urging NNPCL to refrain from using disrespectful political tactics.
He remarked, “Obasanjo’s statements were insightful and reflect the ongoing issues with the country’s refineries. If NNPCL believes otherwise, they should have paid him a formal visit to present their side, not discredit him through the press.”
Peter Ameh, National Secretary of the CUPP, echoed similar sentiments, accusing NNPCL of undermining Obasanjo’s dignity. He also criticized the organization for its tendency to prioritize political maneuvers over important national issues.
Ameh stated, “Inviting Obasanjo through the media is not only disrespectful, but it also undermines his contributions to the country. The NNPCL must shift its focus from politics to addressing the real challenges affecting Nigerians. Obasanjo is simply advocating for the privatization of the refineries, which could improve their performance.”
