Legal Experts Urge NBA To Act Against Colleagues Vilifying Judges In The Media
Senior legal professionals in Nigeria, under the group Lawyers in Defence of Justice (LiDoF), have condemned what they describe as “unwarranted attacks” on the judiciary, particularly on the heads of the country’s federal courts. The lawyers, in a statement issued to the press in Abuja, expressed concern over attempts to involve the judiciary in Nigerian politics, specifically the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
LiDoF expressed disappointment that some of the individuals involved in these attacks are those who should have a better understanding of how the courts operate. The group warned that it would not hesitate to refer these individuals to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) for appropriate action.
The statement, signed by LiDoF Executive Director Silas Igwuebe and Secretary Boniface Olufade, also called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to take action against legal practitioners who publicly denigrate judges.
LiDoF stated: “These attacks have become so frequent that we, as legal professionals, can no longer turn a blind eye to the relentless efforts to tarnish the judiciary’s reputation. It is particularly troubling that some of the individuals leading this campaign are senior members of the Bar.”
The group also addressed specific allegations related to case assignments in the Federal High Court, clarifying that the Chief Judge’s role in assigning cases was appropriate and in line with international best practices. They also emphasized that any accusations of judicial bias should follow the established legal processes, not be conducted through media campaigns.
The lawyers also rejected claims that a housing project for judges was a form of bribery, pointing out that the project was a government initiative and not something orchestrated by the Federal Capital Territory Minister. They further criticized the attacks on Federal High Court judges, noting that similar housing schemes for judges have been in place for years in other states without controversy.
LiDoF concluded by warning that if the attacks on the judiciary persist, they will take necessary actions to protect the integrity of the legal system.
