Labour Unions Slam Government Over Inadequate Drop In Petrol Price
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has demanded further cuts in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), stating that the recent reduction to ₦935 per litre is still unsatisfactory. Despite this decrease, the NLC maintains that petrol prices should drop further. Chris Onyeka, a senior NLC official, rejected any praise for the government or the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) over the price cut. He argued that the current pricing does not reflect the true cost of petrol, as it is still based on imported products, despite Nigeria’s refining capacity.
Onyeka criticized the inclusion of costs like foreign labor, freight charges, and overseas profits in the current pricing structure, which he believes unfairly burdens Nigerians. He emphasized that the price should reflect the actual cost of refining petrol domestically, particularly in local refineries like the Port Harcourt refinery. The future of Nigeria’s Naira-for-Crude policy remains in limbo as negotiations continue between the Nigerian government and Dangote Refinery. The six-month agreement between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery expired on March 31, 2025, without a renewal, leading to the suspension of the refinery’s sale of refined petroleum products in Naira.
