Police Lock Up Lawyer Who Defended Activist Collapsing In Detention
Abiodun Thomas, a detained female human rights advocate, reportedly collapsed at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja due to ongoing health issues. Her lawyer, Barrister Ernest Chukwuemeka Okpaga, expressed concern over her deteriorating health but claims the police refused to provide the necessary medical attention. Okpaga and Thomas’ family were also reportedly denied access to visit her in detention.
Okpaga further alleged that an Assistant Director at the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC) instructed officers to detain him along with Thomas in an interrogation room.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong confirmed the incident on social media, explaining that Okpaga was subjected to physical assault and humiliation by police officers at the NPF-NCCC in Abuja. Effiong also revealed that the police had failed to inform Thomas of the reasons for her arrest or to record her statement until recently, despite her being detained for seven days.
On December 19, after Thomas gave her statement, the police informed Okpaga that she had collapsed. Despite her previous health complaints, the police had reportedly ignored her needs. Okpaga insisted that she receive medical care, but he was subsequently detained alongside her in the interrogation room until her condition stabilized.
After facing resistance, the police eventually took both Thomas and Okpaga to a police hospital in Garki, Abuja, where Thomas is now receiving medical treatment.
