Lagos House Speaker Responds To Anti-Corruption Group’s Accusations: ‘They’Re Just Politically Motivated’

Published

on

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed as “ridiculous and laughable” the accusation that the Assembly spent 17 billion naira on constructing a gate. This claim was made by the self-styled Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, which also called for an investigation into the matter.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during plenary, Dr. Obasa explained that the allegation was likely fueled by fears surrounding the 2027 elections, which are still more than two years away. He made these comments in a statement released to Naija News on Thursday by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele.

Obasa also rejected claims that the Assembly spent 200 million naira on its recent 22nd Thanksgiving Service for staff, emphasizing that such an event had not even taken place. “It’s absurd to think we would spend 17 billion naira on a gate when our annual budget allocation is much smaller,” the Speaker said. “People are scared, and I don’t understand why. We did not and will not embark on such reckless projects. Our Thanksgiving was held last Friday with dignitaries from across the state in attendance.”

Further addressing other allegations by the group, including claims of a connection between him and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, Obasa denied attending the National Assembly’s screening of Olukoyede. “If the group claims I was there, they should check CCTV footage or consult press reports. I’m only addressing this to clear the public’s doubts, not to engage with the writers,” Obasa added.

Earlier, the House’s spokesperson, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, also responded to the accusations, stressing that the Assembly operates with integrity, transparency, and accountability. He described the group’s claims about constituency intervention funds and projects as baseless, noting that the House does not manage such funds. Instead, it holds annual stakeholder meetings where constituents express their expectations, which are then sent to the executive arm for consideration in future budgets.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
