According to sources from the Presidency and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, the meeting with Tinubu focused on the tax bills and strategies to ensure smooth passage through the legislative process.

Governors present included Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Mohammed Bago (Niger), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), and Hyacinth Alia (Benue). Cabinet members present included Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, and Idris Mohammed, Minister of Information.

The source revealed that the discussions focused on helping governors, elected officials, and stakeholders better understand the benefits of the tax reforms and address any concerns.

After the meeting, Uzodimma told reporters that the session also covered plans for the APC’s mid-term congress and strengthening the party’s structure to support President Tinubu’s success.

The proposed tax reforms aim to protect small businesses from tax burdens while tackling issues of tax avoidance and evasion. However, the reforms have faced strong opposition, particularly from northern governors and lawmakers, who argue that some provisions, such as those related to VAT, are detrimental to their region.

The APC governors are expected to meet again on Thursday night to seek support from lawmakers and other political figures, aiming to address opposition and ensure the bills pass smoothly in the National Assembly.
