Segun Sowunmi, former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, revealed that he had discussed with the former PDP presidential candidate the possibility of running in the 2027 elections. However, Sowunmi, who had previously contested for the Ogun State governorship, stated that Atiku has not yet given a definitive answer....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in Abuja on Monday during the launch of the National Opposition Movement Coalition, a platform aimed at strengthening opposition politics and ensuring credible elections ahead of 2027, Sowunmi stressed that the focus should not be solely on Atiku but on individuals with a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.

He remarked, “Who would have thought that Tinubu, given his history, would end up in the villa? Leadership goes beyond any one person.” He added, “Atiku hasn’t told me if he’s running. I’ve asked him twice, and I’ll ask again. If he doesn’t respond, then that’s it.”

Reflecting on the 2023 election, Sowunmi shared his efforts to convince former Anambra Governor Peter Obi to run for president under the PDP. “I traveled across the Southeast, urging PDP members, including Peter Obi. I visited him five times, encouraging him to purchase the nomination form to test the people’s support,” Sowunmi revealed.

Although Obi eventually ran with the Labour Party without informing Sowunmi, he acknowledged Obi’s contribution in bringing the Southeast’s concerns to national attention. However, he emphasized that leadership requires more than just rhetoric, urging support for candidates who can deliver real results.

Sowunmi also discussed the formation of the National Opposition Movement Coalition, which he said was established out of a need to protect Nigeria’s democracy amid growing concerns about the country’s electoral and governance systems. He criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to uphold election integrity despite improvements in its processes, and expressed concern over the weakening credibility of the judiciary, which he believes is vital to maintaining checks on government power.

“South Has Had More Time In Power” — Atiku Speaks On Zoning Debate

Published

on

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has argued that the North is not disadvantaged in Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement under democratic rule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Atiku made the statement during an interview on Arise Television, where he spoke on zoning, fairness, and political balance in the country.

He noted that since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, the South has held the presidency for about 18 years, while the North has governed for roughly 10 years.

According to him, this should be taken into account when discussing which region has benefited more from the country’s power rotation system. He also maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only major political party with zoning clearly embedded in its constitution.

“The South has governed for 18 years and the North for 10. So who is really in deficit if we are being fair? Even more broadly, the only party with zoning formally entrenched is the PDP,” he said.

Atiku also recalled the constitutional conference held during the military era under General Sani Abacha, where he led a group that opposed the inclusion of rotational presidency in the constitution.

He said the proposal, championed by the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, was rejected at the time because his group had majority support among delegates.

According to him, Ekwueme later acknowledged that the decision may not have been ideal during his funeral years later. Atiku added that he now believes a rotational system, if adopted earlier, could have ensured a more balanced distribution of power across Nigeria’s regions.
