Ogun LG Election Tensions Rise As Labour Party Reports Multiple Attacks By APC Thugs

Published

on

As the local government elections in Ogun State approach on November 16, the Labour Party (LP) has raised concerns about repeated attacks on its candidates by suspected political thugs.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Tokunbo Peters, the party’s publicity secretary, revealed these incidents in a statement released to DAILY POST on Thursday. He stated that the attacks on LP candidates running for chairmanship and councillorship positions began on Tuesday, November 12.

The first reported incident occurred in Ewekoro Local Government Area, where suspected thugs attacked Alani Elijah Juwon, the LP chairmanship candidate for the area, and his wife outside her shop. The couple was rescued by nearby residents and passersby, after which a formal complaint was filed at Itori Police Station.

Peters also mentioned that candidates in Abeokuta South, Obafemi-Owode, and Ogun East were similarly targeted, suffering physical injuries and threats. He alleged that the attackers were “APC thugs,” pointing out Governor Abiodun’s earlier claims that the opposition had no presence in Ogun State and his confidence that the APC would win all local elections.

The statement detailed that on November 13, Honourable Kenny Owolabi, the Labour Party chairman for Abeokuta South, was shot in an attack near First Bank in the Sapon area of Abeokuta. He is currently receiving medical treatment for the gunshot wounds. Prior to the attack, Owolabi had reportedly been threatened with withdrawal from the election.

Additionally, on November 14, suspected APC thugs attempted to break into the home of Honourable Olufemi Thomas, the Labour Party chairmanship candidate for Obafemi Owode. However, Thomas had moved his family to a secure location after receiving threats, and the assailants left when they found the house empty, warning him to withdraw from the race.

Candidates in Ogun East have also experienced similar threats and harassment. In Ijebu Ode, Odogbolu, and Sagamu Local Government Areas, LP campaign posters and banners have been torn down by suspected APC thugs, and candidates have been pressured to quit the race. Due to security concerns, campaign rallies in Ijebu Ode and Sagamu have been canceled multiple times.

The Labour Party leadership in Ogun State expressed concern that these attacks were part of an effort by the ruling APC to intimidate the opposition and force a withdrawal from the elections. Despite the violence, the LP vowed to continue participating in the electoral process.

The party has called on security agencies to ensure the safety of polling units and collation centers on election day.

In response, APC’s publicity secretary, Tunde Oladunjoy, dismissed the Labour Party’s claims, stating, “Which party? Please, I have better things to do than respond to a barely existing Labour Party.

reports that a video of the incident has gone viral on , showing the moment the actress confronted the men during the shoot.

In the clip, the men are seen approaching the set and insisting on a “settlement,” a common form of extortion reportedly targeted at film crews working in public spaces across Lagos.

Ademoye, speaking in a blend of English and Nigerian Pidgin, made it clear she was not opposed to appreciating people around her set but would not accept forceful demands.

“I am a street girl, let me tell you. Ask around, when it comes to matters of the street, I like settling boys. But you don’t come to me and tell me to give you a certain amount,” she said.

When one of the men insisted he was not there to beg, she quickly countered, saying: “Yes, you came to beg. You are even being proud of it.”

Tension rose when one of the men threatened to turn off her camera, prompting Ademoye to respond sharply: “Camera that nobody in your generation has.”

Although the confrontation was tense, the situation did not escalate physically, and no weapons were seen in the video. The shoot was visibly disrupted by the presence and demands of the group.

The incident has since generated reactions online, with many social media users praising the actress for her calmness, confidence, and refusal to be intimidated during the encounter.

Turaki-Led PDP Faction Raises Alarm, Describes Supreme Court Ruling As ‘Dangerous Bend’.

Published

The Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised the Supreme Court judgment that nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group described the ruling as a “dangerous bend” for the party.

reports that the Supreme Court, in a split 3–2 decision delivered on Thursday, dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki-led faction, with three justices holding that the case lacked merit.

The faction argued that the judgment has effectively left the PDP without clear leadership.

Ememobong expressed confidence that the party’s existing structures would intervene to stabilise the situation and restore leadership direction moving forward.

According to the statement, the Supreme Court panel, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, upheld the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court which nullified the Ibadan convention.

The majority judgment—delivered by Justices Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Stephen Adah, and Garba—held that the appellants acted in contempt of a subsisting Federal High Court order. They ruled that parties in contempt could not be heard by the apex court, leading to the dismissal of the appeal.

However, the minority judgment delivered by Justices Haruna Tsammani and Abubakar Umar held a different view. They ruled that the dispute was an internal party matter and therefore not justiciable in court.

They further argued that the Federal High Court was not dealing with any action involving a government agency, but rather a leadership tussle within the PDP, which should not have been adjudicated by the courts.

The dissenting justices also faulted the majority for raising issues on its own without giving parties the opportunity to respond, stating that such an approach contradicts established Supreme Court practice.

They insisted that courts must not determine issues not properly argued by the parties before them.

The judgment also affirmed the Court of Appeal’s decision suspending certain party officials, including Ajibade, SAN, and Anyanwu.

Reacting to the outcome, the faction said the ruling places the PDP in a precarious position and warned that it could have wider implications for Nigeria’s multi-party democracy if not carefully managed.

However, it maintained optimism that the party’s internal organs would take steps to resolve the crisis and restore leadership stability.

Meanwhile, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the Tinubu administration over what he described as rising public debt and increasing government borrowing.

In a statement released on Thursday, Obi said countries must avoid reckless borrowing without a clear and productive repayment plan.

He argued that many of the loans being taken by the current administration do not meet legal requirements or basic economic logic.

reports that Obi’s comments come in response to President Tinubu’s recent remark that debt is not a “leprosy.”

However, Obi disagreed, insisting that borrowing could become dangerous if mismanaged, describing it as something that can turn into a “leprosy” or even a “deadly cancer” when not properly directed.

He further expressed concern that Nigeria’s borrowing pattern appears to be focused more on consumption than on productive investment.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain urged the Tinubu administration to ensure that borrowed funds are effectively utilised for the benefit of Nigerians, rather than being justified without tangible impact on development.
