Lookman, who was ranked 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or standings, was heavily linked with a transfer during the summer, with reports suggesting he was on the verge of joining PSG. However, the move fell through after Atalanta refused to let him go.
In a recent interview with OKC, Barison praised Lookman not only for his footballing ability but also for his humility. He stated, “I have a great deal of respect for him. I had the opportunity to meet him through Okoli, and I can confidently say that he is incredibly humble.”
Barison added, “Next year could be pivotal for him. While Atalanta is a fantastic club, I truly believe Lookman has the potential to take his career to the next level by playing for one of Europe’s top teams.”
Lookman enjoyed a breakout season in 2023-2024, playing a key role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph. His memorable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen highlighted his ability on the biggest stage. His contributions were also crucial in helping the Super Eagles reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Lookman’s stellar form earned him Atalanta’s Player of the Season award for the second consecutive year, with an impressive tally of 17 goals and 10 assists in 45 matches across all competitions.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigeria jersey, representing my country and giving everything I had for this beautiful sport, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football… I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”
She concluded her farewell message with deep appreciation, stating that she steps away from international duty carrying 86 total appearances, zero regrets, and boundless gratitude for her teammates, fans, and the nation.
Joining the global wave of recognition, CAF honored her monumental impact on African women’s football via social media, writing:
