Obaseki’s Final Address:
“My dear people of Edo State, as I approach the end of my two terms as Governor, I feel immense gratitude to God and to the wonderful people of Edo for granting me the privilege to serve. The journey has been challenging, but I thank God for giving me the strength, vision, and health to bring about the monumental transformation that has reshaped our state.
When I assumed office in 2016, we faced a choice: continue with the status quo or chart a new path to develop our state. We chose the latter, fully aware of the risks, and today the progress we have made in infrastructure, the economy, governance, and public service stands as proof of the success of that bold decision.
The people of Edo stood by us as we embarked on a radical transformation of governance, one that has defied expectations. At the start, it was clear that the state’s social, economic, and political frameworks were weak and needed repair. What became evident was that a total systems overhaul was necessary. Our primary focus was to rebuild the state’s institutions and strengthen governance. We committed to creating strong institutions, not strongmen or godfathers.
Today, Edo is home to Nigeria’s most advanced public service. Our investments in human capital, technology, and institutional reforms have cultivated a responsive, future-focused civil service. We now recruit based on merit and continue to upskill our workforce, ensuring that our employees are motivated and capable of delivering high-quality services.
Our greatest accomplishment is regaining control over land administration and revenue collection, removing non-state actors who had previously hindered our growth. Through technology and reduced bureaucracy, we restored law and order, creating an environment conducive to investment and development.
In the last eight years, we’ve made tremendous strides in infrastructure, building over 850 kilometers of roads across all local governments and generating nearly 1000MW of electricity daily. We now lead the nation with over 2,500 kilometers of fiber optic cables. In education, Edo has become a trailblazer, training over 15,000 teachers and enabling nearly 400,000 students to compete globally in literacy and numeracy.
Our efforts in technical and vocational education have revitalized our schools, positioning the youth for industrialization and future success. I am leaving office with pride knowing that we’ve removed the stigma of human trafficking and irregular migration from our state, and I’m confident that our improved educational system will prevent future generations from seeking menial jobs overseas.
In healthcare, we’ve rebuilt the primary health care network, expanded our insurance coverage to over 300,000 subscribers, and enhanced the Stella Obasanjo Specialist Hospital, making it a leading health center for the South-South region. We’ve also prioritized security by establishing a community-led network and investing in state-of-the-art command centers to maintain peace and attract businesses.
Our agricultural revolution has made Edo a leader in palm oil and cassava production, and with the establishment of modular refineries, we’ve positioned the state as a key player in Nigeria’s petrochemical industry. We’ve also attracted billions of dollars in manufacturing investments, turning Edo into a hub for industrial growth.
I’m proud to have fulfilled my promise of creating over 200,000 jobs, transitioning Edo from a civil service-based economy to a production-driven one. Our economy has more than doubled, growing from $10 billion to over $25 billion, with internally generated revenue expected to reach 85 billion by December.
As I leave office, I leave behind a strategic plan for the future, including the Edo State Regional Development and Benin City Master Plans. These plans will guide the state’s growth for the next 30 years, ensuring that the progress we’ve made is sustained.
We have indeed come a long way. Our children now have a future of opportunities, and our youth have hope. Though there have been challenges, I believe that democracy and good governance will always prevail. I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone who supported us during this journey—our citizens, development partners, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and youth and women’s groups.
I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart, and I leave office with hope for the future. Long live Edo State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria!”
