Just In: WhatsApp Ban In Equatorial Guinea Responds To S3x Scandal The government of Equatorial Guinea has imposed new restrictions on its citizens’ use of WhatsApp, particularly targeting the downloading and sharing of multimedia content via mobile data. The move follows a directive to telecom providers aimed at curbing the distribution of inappropriate material, following a major sex scandal involving high-ranking officials.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The controversy centers around Baltasar Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), who is at the heart of a scandal uncovered during a fraud investigation. Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, is accused of engaging in illicit affairs with multiple married women, including the wives of prominent figures in the country, such as the sister of the President, the wife of the Director General of Police, and several ministers’ wives.

The scandal came to light after authorities conducted an unscheduled search of Engonga’s office and residence, where they discovered a large collection of explicit videos—over 400 in total—some of which were recorded with the consent of the women involved. These videos have since been leaked online, sparking widespread media attention.

The restrictions on WhatsApp have sparked significant backlash among citizens, who have expressed frustration over their inability to share photos, videos, and voice messages, especially for work and educational purposes. While some have resorted to using Wi-Fi connections, this limitation has disrupted daily communication for many.

A local source quoted by Ahora EG criticized the measures, saying, “Should an entire country be punished for the actions of a few? The decision to restrict these vital communication functions seems overly punitive and unnecessary. In an era where digital communication is critical, this move seems more about control than facilitating free expression.”

Another citizen added, “Why should the entire population suffer for the actions of a few? We still haven’t received any clear explanation from the government on why this restriction was implemented, nor how long it will last.”

In addition to the WhatsApp restrictions, the country’s Vice President, Teddy Nguema, recently announced plans to install surveillance cameras in all government offices to monitor officials’ conduct, aiming to combat corruption and ensure adherence to public service laws.
