Mikel Arteta continues to try and balance his creaking squad as Arsenal go back into midweek action. With the head coach searching for his second major piece of silverware in charge, the Carabao Cup takes on an increased importance.

It has now been over four years since Arteta lifted the FA Cup and – despite back-to-back serious title charges – there’s a desire to be crowned winners of something. After beating League One outfit Bolton in the third-round – the point at which they entered the competition – Arsenal now travel to Championship outfit Preston North End.

For Arteta, the challenge will be rotating his squad. Arsenal are still dealing with a host of injury issues which seem not to relent. Although Jurrien Timber and Bukayo Saka returned for Sunday’s draw at home to Liverpool, problems have been picked up on the way.

Timber himself, for example, had to go off late on. Fortunately for Arteta, the Dutchman appears to have just been suffering with cramp instead of anything serious, “Jurrien was fine,” the head coach announced on Tuesday. “He was too tired to continue the game. Not an injury there.”

The same is not true for Gabriel Magalhaes. He was forced off earlier on in the game with a knee issue after Darwin Nunez collided with the back of his leg. The defender came on as a substitute in the last round, helping out in a youthful team, but faces a race to be fit here.

“We’re still assessing him,” said Arteta. “It doesn’t look that bad. He was much better the next day. Too soon to say when he’ll be out.”

Saka is back in the squad, but may well find himself rested. Riccardo Calafiori is certainly out after going off last week against Shakhtar Donetsk. Arteta revealed it will be “a few weeks” for him.

Martin Odegaard remains side-lined, as do Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Arteta will also have to decide how to balance his goalkeeper situation.

David Raya is clear to play, but often would be rotated out for protection. Neto is cup-tied, however, and cannot play Carabao Cup fixtures. Tommy Setford is the next in-line, and could find himself in contention to play if Arteta does choose to give Raya the night off.

While largely still an extremely strong group, Arteta will hope to get some more minutes into his fringe players – even in an already small squad – and Hale End academy hopefuls. Josh Nichols, Ismeal Kabia, Maldini Kacurri, and Myles Lewis-Skelly all played against Bolton – as did Ethan Nwaneri.

Here, football.london predicts what the 20-man squad named by Arteta for the game will be;

Goalkeepers: David Raya, Tommy Setford

Defenders: Ben White, William Saliba, Jurrien Timber, Jakub Kiwior, Josh Nichols, Oleksandr Zinchenko

Midfielders: Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Ethan Nwaneri, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly

Attackers: Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka

Aston Villa will face Bologna in the UEFA Europa League at Villa Park on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Here’s an updated preview and prediction based on the latest information:

Match Preview

Aston Villa enters this match under pressure after a challenging start to the Premier League season, where they’ve yet to secure a win and have scored only once in five matches. Manager Unai Emery, a four-time Europa League winner, is hopeful that European competition can provide a much-needed boost to the team’s form. Emery emphasized the importance of the Europa League as a special opportunity to turn their season around (Reuters).

Bologna, participating in the Europa League as the winner of the Coppa Italia, has had a mixed start to their Serie A campaign, with two wins and two losses. Both defeats came away from home and were goalless, highlighting their struggles in attack (The Sun).

Head-to-Head

In their last meeting, Aston Villa defeated Bologna 2-0 in the Champions League. Villa has a strong record in European competitions, and with home advantage, they will be looking to continue their winning ways.

Prediction

Given Villa’s home advantage and Bologna’s recent away form, Villa is favored to secure a narrow victory. A 1-0 or 2-0 win for Villa is a plausible outcome. Key players like Ollie Watkins, who has been involved in most of Villa’s attacking plays, could be instrumental in breaking the deadlock.

Chelsea Palmer Avoids Surgery for Groin Injury, Maresca Confirms

Published

on

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer will not need immediate surgery on a groin injury that forced him off during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United, manager Enzo Maresca said Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Palmer, 23, has been dealing with the problem for several weeks and managed only 21 minutes at Old Trafford before leaving the pitch. The setback has raised concerns over the England international’s fitness as Chelsea prepare for a busy run of matches.

Maresca, however, moved to calm fears of a long-term absence.

“The medical staff didn’t mention to me about surgery,” Maresca told reporters. “I don’t know if in the next days or the next weeks, but I don’t think so, to be honest.”

The Italian coach said Palmer was determined to play against United despite being less than fully fit.

“He made a huge effort on Saturday to try to play the game,” Maresca said. “He did the test, and he was OK, but not 100 percent. He wanted to be there to help his teammates. Unfortunately, it was painful, so we decided to change it. Now it’s more day-by-day, week-by-week, game-by-game to see how it is and then decide what we do.”

Set to Miss League Cup Match

Palmer is expected to sit out Chelsea’s League Cup third-round tie on Tuesday at Lincoln City, a League One club currently enjoying strong form.

Chelsea will also be without midfielder Romeo Lavia and defender Benoit Badiashile, leaving Maresca with limited options for the trip.

The coach suggested he may turn to Chelsea’s youth academy to fill gaps in the squad, but admitted the approach carries risk in a knockout competition.

“These are the games that worry me most, because you can slip up very easily,” Maresca said. “Football is full of these kinds of games, and I am very worried about that.”

Key Player for Chelsea

Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, has been one of the team’s most important players over the past year. His creativity and ability to score in big matches helped Chelsea finish strongly last season and earned him a place in England’s squad for Euro 2024.

This season, injuries have limited his impact. He has started only two Premier League matches and has yet to complete a full 90 minutes.

Chelsea fans will be hoping Palmer avoids a lengthy spell on the sidelines. With the club competing in the Premier League, domestic cups and European football, his presence is seen as vital to Maresca’s first campaign in charge.

Injury Concerns Pile Up

Palmer’s setback adds to a growing list of fitness issues at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have struggled with injuries to key players over the past two seasons, a problem that has disrupted consistency on the pitch.

Maresca, who took over as manager in the summer, has emphasized the need for patience as he builds a team capable of challenging for trophies. But he acknowledged that squad depth will be tested in the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead

For now, Chelsea are focusing on their midweek trip to Lincoln, followed by a return to Premier League action at home next weekend.

Palmer’s condition will continue to be monitored by medical staff, with updates expected before the next league fixture.

While surgery is not on the table, the decision to manage the injury on a game-by-game basis means Maresca faces uncertainty over when his star forward will return at full strength.

“Cole is very important for us,” Maresca said. “We need him, but we also need to protect him. It’s a balance, and we will see how he improves.”

According to renowned Turkish journalist Yakup Çınar, the trio of Champions League-bound clubs are interested in signing the Napoli striker on a permanent deal. However, the competition doesn’t end in Europe—two lucrative offers from Saudi Arabian clubs are also on the table.

“There are currently PSG, Chelsea and Galatasaray possibilities on the table,” Çınar was quoted as saying via Habersarikirmizi. “There are also two big offers from Saudi Arabia. The decision is awaited.”

Osimhen, who spent the current season on loan at Galatasaray, is yet to make a final decision about his future. Reports indicate that the Turkish champions have given him one week to decide whether he will commit to a permanent stay or return to Napoli.

Despite speculation, Osimhen’s next move remains uncertain, though his standout performances continue to draw admiration across the continent. All three European suitors—Chelsea, PSG, and Galatasaray—have secured Champions League football next season, making the decision even more pivotal.
