Fuel Price Surge Triggers Alarm: House Of Reps Calls For Immediate Review
Fuel Price Surge Triggers Alarm: House Of Reps Calls For Immediate Review. The House of Representatives has issued a warning that the recent increase in fuel pump prices could lead to social unrest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This warning comes after a meeting between the Federal Government and labor leaders regarding the petrol price hike concluded without an agreement.
Last week, the NNPC retail outlets raised petrol prices to N1,030 per litre from N897 in Abuja, while in Lagos, the price surged to N998 per litre from N868. Other regions saw similar increases. This marks the second price hike in a month, reflecting a 14.8% increase or N133.
The price hikes have led to higher transportation and food costs nationwide, prompting the organized labor and private sector to demand an immediate reversal of the increase. The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress condemned the hike, calling for urgent action.
During a plenary session, the House urged the Federal Government to reverse the price increases for petrol and cooking gas, considering the ongoing economic hardships faced by citizens. This resolution followed the adoption of a motion introduced by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and 100 other members.
Chinda highlighted that the rising prices of petrol and cooking gas are placing an unsustainable financial burden on ordinary Nigerians and worsening living costs. He noted that the removal of fuel subsidies, combined with global oil price fluctuations and naira depreciation, has significantly contributed to the increase.
He stated, “The escalating prices of fuel and gas are affecting transportation, food, essential goods, and healthcare, further driving inflation and pushing many families into deeper financial hardship.”
Chinda also pointed out that small and medium-sized enterprises are struggling with operational costs due to the fuel price hikes, threatening economic stability and job security. He expressed concerns that unless immediate action is taken, Nigeria could face an economic crisis that leads to increased crime and mortality rates.
House Minority Whip Ali Isa criticized the continuous rise in petroleum prices, stating, “The people are suffering due to the fuel price increase. The government must listen to the people’s cries and revise any policies that negatively impact Nigerians.”
Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi added that the fuel price increases have rendered the new minimum wage ineffective, as rising costs have affected food prices and transportation.
In response to the motion, the House called for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to expedite the maintenance of domestic refineries to enhance local refining capacity. The House also urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to implement monetary policies to mitigate the negative effects of fuel price hikes on inflation.
Additionally, the House encouraged the Tinubu-led government to explore alternative energy sources and diversify the country’s energy mix to reduce reliance on petrol and gas.
Following demands from labor leaders for fuel price reductions, a closed-door meeting took place between the Federal Government and union representatives in Abuja. Despite discussions, no agreement was reached, with labor leaders firmly advocating for a reversal of the price hike.
Minister of Information Mohammad Idris emphasized the government’s commitment to ongoing engagement with labor leaders, stating, “It is a work in progress, not a one-off thing. Labour is an important component of this country.”
Bagudu noted that while tough decisions may bring challenges, the government is focused on creating a more stable economy, asserting that they are confident in the direction the economy is headed.
