In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President condemned the treatment the team received, describing it as unsportsmanlike and inhumane.
President Tinubu called for collective efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future and emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He urged the organization to take appropriate action against those responsible for violating the rules of sports engagement as outlined in their statutes.
In his statement, Tinubu noted, “The harrowing experience of the national football team at the hands of their hosts and the Libyan authorities prompted the Nigerian Football Federation to withdraw the Super Eagles from the scheduled match on Tuesday.” He commended the collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in addressing the situation and ensuring the players’ safe return.
The President praised the Super Eagles for maintaining their spirit during the challenging ordeal, recognizing football’s ability to unite nations and people. He condemned the treatment of the Nigerian team as a stark contrast to the values of sportsmanship he holds dear.
Tinubu’s remarks reflect a broader call for solidarity among football lovers and administrators to work together to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
