Kogi Government Seek For Assistance As Flood Displaces Over 200 Communities. During a press briefing on Monday in Kotonkarfe, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, warned of an impending humanitarian crisis, stating, “We are in a dire emergency situation at the moment and this is sad. The flood disaster here is devastating.”
Fanwo reported that nine of the state’s 21 Local Government Areas are currently impacted, which constitutes almost 50% of the region. The government has established approximately 68 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, but they are insufficient to accommodate the overwhelming number of displaced individuals. The flooding has also destroyed critical infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.
The Commissioner highlighted the distressing conditions faced by vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and children, stating, “Seeing the aged and little children in this kind of distress is a horrible sight.” He credited the activation of an early warning and enlightenment plan for preventing loss of life amidst the crisis.
Fanwo emphasized that the state is expending significant resources daily but still requires more help. He urged the Federal Government, NGOs, and philanthropists to provide support in response to the devastating situation.
To address the disaster, Kogi State has established a Flood Disaster Response Team, led by the Deputy Governor, assuring victims of the government’s commitment to supporting them during this challenging time. Key affected areas include Kogi, Lokoja, Adavi, Ofu, Ajaokuta, Idah, and Ibaji.
