According to NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, the team faced significant hardship upon arrival at the Al-Abraq International Airport on October 13, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match scheduled for October 15.
The delegation, which included NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and other dignitaries, was subjected to delays and harsh treatment by Libyan airport authorities. The issues began when the team’s chartered aircraft, initially set to land in Benghazi, was redirected to Al-Abraq Airport despite being short on fuel and lacking standard airport facilities. The delegation was met with scant respect and substandard services, with the team’s luggage delayed for over an hour and no transportation arrangements made by the Libyan Football Federation.
The situation deteriorated further as the delegation endured a night at the airport without food, water, or proper communication facilities. The NFF reported that attempts to resolve the issue with Libyan officials were met with unfulfilled promises and outright rejection, escalating frustrations among players and staff.
Amid growing concerns for the players’ well-being, the NFF called on higher authorities and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to intervene. Ultimately, the Super Eagles returned to Nigeria on October 14, while awaiting CAF’s decision on the unplayed match.
The NFF condemned the incident, describing it as an act of hostility that goes against the spirit of football, which aims to foster unity and sportsmanship among nations.
