Ogun Poultry Farmers Urge Government Action On Rising Costs And Insecurity
Ogun Poultry Farmers Urge Government Action On Rising Costs And Insecurity. The former Chairperson of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ogun State, Mrs. Blessing Alawode, has appealed to the government to address the escalating insecurity and streamline taxation to support farmers in sustaining their operations and feeding the nation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Alawode expressed concerns during a keynote address at the World Egg Day event, held at the Ogun State Agricultural Development Programme office in Abeokuta. She pointed out that insecurity, even more than the rising cost of poultry feed, is forcing many farmers to shut down their businesses, leaving workers unemployed.
She emphasized the urgent need for the government to ensure adequate security for farmers amid the increasing cases of kidnappings. “This situation is beyond what we can handle on our own. The government must step in to protect its citizens. The level of insecurity is alarming, and immediate action is needed,” Alawode said.
In addition to insecurity, she highlighted the burden of multiple taxation on farmers, noting that these economic pressures are stifling their businesses. She urged the state government to provide support, such as subsidized maize, and to ensure that farmers benefit from federal intervention programs.
Alawode also called for greater collaboration among poultry farmers to strengthen their ability to meet the nation’s food needs, stressing the importance of partnerships in the sector.
The acting Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ogun State, Ajibola Odukoya, encouraged Nigerians to increase their consumption of eggs due to their nutritional benefits, including boosting health and reducing hospital visits. He debunked the misconception that eggs are unsuitable for the elderly, stating that they are a “complete meal” containing essential nutrients that support memory, immunity, and overall health.
Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, represented by Mrs. Abosede Edun, commended the farmers for their efforts in combating hunger and malnutrition. He advocated for the regular inclusion of eggs in diets, citing their benefits for brain health, muscle development, and children’s growth.
The event, themed “United by Eggs,” aimed to raise awareness about the challenges facing poultry farmers and promote the health advantages of egg consumption.
