Northern Youths Express Concerns Over Nigeria’s Decline

During a recent community engagement program in Katsina State, CNG President Jamilu Charanchi stated, “Nigeria is no longer working. People are suffering, struggling to afford even one meal a day.” He emphasized that insecurity has become a pervasive issue in the region.
Charanchi highlighted that the initiative for community engagement arose from the realization that regional leaders are unwilling to confront these pressing challenges. He noted that northern Nigeria, despite its rich cultural heritage and abundant resources, continues to lag in development, grappling with issues such as drug abuse, youth unrest, and high rates of poverty and illiteracy.
To combat these challenges, the CNG has undertaken various initiatives, including a roundtable on insecurity held in January 2024. However, despite some progress, issues like banditry persist, underscoring the need for a united effort from all stakeholders.
“The recent devaluation of the naira and other economic hardships have worsened living conditions,” Charanchi remarked, pointing to the significant poverty experienced by many. He also referenced the recent violent protests driven by widespread dissatisfaction and hardship.
The CNG advocates for a shift from government-driven solutions to community-based approaches, believing this would foster a comprehensive understanding and coordinated efforts to tackle these issues.
In his address, a representative from the Katsina State government, Commissioner for Information Bala Zango, outlined the administration’s initiatives under Governor Dikko Radda, including scholarship programs for students and the establishment of community security efforts that have reportedly reduced insecurity by 70%. The state has invested heavily in agriculture and education, employing thousands of teachers and renovating schools.
The event aimed to address the socio-economic challenges facing northern Nigeria and to encourage greater community participation in governance and development.
