Speaking during Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu said that the modalities for the conference and delegate selection will be finalized soon.
“As we tackle today’s challenges, we remain focused on harnessing the energy of the next generation for a brighter future,” Tinubu stated in his second Independence Day address since taking office on May 29, 2023.
He emphasized the importance of involving young people in shaping the future, saying, “We are leading with the future we want to leave behind for our children, recognizing that we cannot build a future without their involvement as architects of that vision.”
Tinubu announced the National Youth Conference, which will serve as a platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Nigerian youth, who make up more than 60 percent of the population. The President added that the conference would spark meaningful dialogue and empower youth to actively participate in nation-building.
The 30-day conference will unite young Nigerians to develop solutions on issues like education, employment, innovation, security, and social justice. Tinubu said the framework for the event, including delegate selection, will be created in collaboration with youth representatives to ensure their voices are central to the discussions.
“The government will thoroughly consider and act on the recommendations from this conference as part of our commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Nigeria,” he assured.
Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s decision to reform the country’s political economy and defense system for national survival. He praised the resilience of Nigerians, noting that the country has overcome crises that have caused the disintegration of other nations.
Additionally, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to winning the war against banditry and terrorism, which will allow displaced farmers to return to their fields, helping to lower rising food prices.
