Breaking: Nigerian Security Authorities Meet, Consider Shutting Down Airports Over October 1 Nationwide Protests. On September 30, 2024, top sources revealed that Nigerian security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, are currently holding discussions about potential measures to prevent the #FearlessInOctober protests set for October 1.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Among the actions being considered is the closure of airports across the country to limit movement and suppress the planned demonstrations.
Although no final decision has been reached, SaharaReporters learned that security agencies are highly concerned about the protests and are exploring ways to disrupt them. “Security agencies at Nigerian airports are currently meeting to discuss the possibility of closing airports due to the nationwide protests,” a source said.
Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command earlier announced that it had deployed adequate personnel and equipment throughout Abuja in anticipation of both the October 1 Independence Day celebrations and the potential protests. Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, issued a statement assuring residents of a secure environment, noting the deployment of anti-riot equipment, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel, and visible policing across key locations.
Adeh further warned that traffic diversions would be implemented in areas expected to witness large crowds, including the Central Area and Eagle Square. Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities via the provided emergency contact numbers.
The #FearlessInOctober protests are expected to take place in major cities across the country on October 1, with demonstrators voicing their concerns over issues such as economic hardship and hunger under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The Take It Back Movement, one of the organizers of the protest, released convergence points for participants, including Eagle Square in Abuja, Ikeja Under Bridge in Lagos, and several other locations across various states.
While rumors circulate regarding the closure of airports, both the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, and the Director of Aviation Security Services, ACP Idafe Afeghai (Retd), denied knowledge of any plans to halt flight operations.
The #FearlessInOctober protest follows the momentum of the #EndBadGovernance protests earlier in the year, which aimed to address similar issues facing Nigerians today. Protest organizers have expressed their determination to continue until their demands are met.
