Electrifying Edo: Akpata’s Bold Vision For Energy Access....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Written By Oshiobugie John

As part of his campaign manifesto, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata has laid out a transformative plan to solve one of the most pressing challenges facing Edo State: electricity and energy access. Recognizing that reliable power is the backbone of any modern economy, Akpata promises to usher in a new era of steady electricity supply that will uplift businesses, improve living standards, and pave the way for Edo State’s rise as an industrial hub. “Without dependable electricity, our markets, schools, hospitals, and MSMEs cannot thrive,” Akpata emphasizes, underscoring how central power supply is to the state’s economic development.

Drawing on his extensive experience in the energy sector, Akpata brings more than just promises — he brings expertise. He was a key player in advising the Federal Government on the unbundling of NEPA, the now-defunct National Electric Power Authority, and had a hand in the creation of the Azura 461 MW power plant in Edo State, which contributes about 10% of the national grid’s power. This track record of hands-on involvement at both federal and state levels gives Akpata an edge in understanding the power challenges that Edo State faces, and most importantly, how to solve them.

Akpata’s vision for Edo’s energy future is ambitious and people-centric. He plans to create a conducive environment for private sector investment in mini-grids, embedded generation, and off-grid power projects to ensure that power is available not only in urban areas but in rural communities as well. This approach will help decentralize power supply, ensuring that even the most remote parts of the state can experience the benefits of reliable electricity. In addition, Akpata is keen on promoting Edo’s renewable energy potentials, particularly in biomass, solar, hydro, and wind, all of which could attract significant investment and boost the local economy.

Akpata is already taking steps to engage investors in the renewable energy space, and he intends to collaborate with multilateral development banks, private sector investors, and international development partners to mobilize capital for power projects within the state. This proactive approach signals his determination to make Edo State a leader in renewable energy while also addressing the immediate needs of residents by collaborating with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to improve power supply in cities and towns.

To cap off his energy plan, Akpata promises the rehabilitation of streetlights across Edo’s metropolitan roads. This move is designed not just to beautify the state, but to enhance security and ease of movement at night. With Akpata at the helm, Edo State is poised to experience an energy revolution that will boost productivity, create jobs, and make life easier for all its citizens.
