Passengers traveling with Kenya Airways experienced significant delays and cancellations on Wednesday due to a strike by airport staff at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The strike, led by the Kenyan Aviation Workers Union, began at midnight and brought operations at one of Africa’s busiest airports to a standstill.
As travelers arrived, they were met with long queues outside the airport. Many were forced to sit on their luggage while waiting for updates, and vehicles were stuck in traffic trying to enter the airport, as reported by AFP.
Union leader Moses Ndiema emphasized that the strike would continue until the Kenyan government abandoned its plans to lease JKIA to India’s Adani Group for a period of 30 years. “The strike is on, and all shifts have been suspended,” Ndiema stated firmly. “Adani must go; that is not optional.”
In anticipation of the disruptions, Kenya Airways advised travelers to expect significant operational challenges, including potential further delays and cancellations for both incoming and outgoing flights.
Critics of the proposed $1.85 billion deal with Adani argue that it could lead to job losses for local employees and undermine Kenya’s future revenue. Currently, JKIA contributes over five percent to the country’s GDP through passenger and freight services, making the airport a crucial asset for the nation.
Concerns about the lack of “transparency” in the leasing process prompted the Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission to secure a temporary suspension of the deal from the High Court.
Despite the backlash, the Kenyan government has defended the agreement as vital for refurbishing JKIA, which, despite handling 8.8 million passengers and 380,000 tonnes of cargo during the 2022-23 period, has faced ongoing issues with power outages and infrastructure deficiencies. The Kenya Airport Authority has indicated that, under the terms of the agreement, Adani would be responsible for adding a second runway and upgrading the passenger terminal.
