At least 17 young children tragically lost their lives after a devastating fire swept through a primary school dormitory in central Kenya, according to police reports released on Friday. The fire erupted overnight at the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, causing widespread devastation and heartbreak.

The blaze broke out around midnight, rapidly engulfing the dormitory where children, aged between five and twelve, were fast asleep. Hillside Endarasha Academy, which serves approximately 800 pupils, was left in shock as rescue teams rushed to the scene.

Heartbreaking Losses and Injuries

National police spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed that 17 children perished in the fire, their bodies burned beyond recognition. In addition, several others sustained serious injuries, with 16 children rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Onyango added that more victims might be discovered as authorities continue their investigation into the scene.

The victims of this horrific fire were around nine years old, and the cause of the fire remains unknown. Investigators have already launched an inquiry into the tragedy, aiming to uncover the root cause of the disaster.

President’s Condolences and Promised Investigation

President William Ruto expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy. Offering his condolences to the families of the deceased, he described the incident as “devastating news” in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter). Ruto assured the public that he had directed officials to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire and hold those responsible accountable.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the children who have lost their lives in the fire tragedy,” Ruto said. He vowed to ensure a full investigation, emphasizing that accountability will be demanded in the aftermath of this horrific event.

Ongoing Efforts to Support Affected Families

The Kenyan Red Cross has mobilized its resources to assist the affected community, providing psychological support to students, teachers, and families affected by the fire. In a post on X, the organization emphasized its role in supporting the multi-agency response team at the scene.

This tragedy is not an isolated incident in East Africa. Kenya and neighboring countries have faced similar school fire disasters in the past. In 2016, a fire at a girls’ high school in Nairobi claimed the lives of nine students, while in 2001, an arson attack at the Kyanguli Mixed Secondary School in Machakos led to the deaths of 67 pupils. In Tanzania, a 1994 fire at Shauritanga Secondary School for Girls killed 40 children, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s history of school safety concerns.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
