France’s Flamanville Nuclear Reactor Finally Resumes Operations Amid Ongoing Delays....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
France’s latest nuclear reactor, the Flamanville 3 in Normandy, has resumed operations after facing significant delays and cost overruns. This European Pressurised Reactor (EPR), which was initially expected to lead a new generation of nuclear energy plants, has now been completed a staggering 12 years late, costing approximately 13.2 billion euros (around $14.6 billion).
Earlier this week, the reactor was briefly operational but automatically shut down on Wednesday during a critical startup phase. A spokesman for the French state-owned energy company EDF confirmed that Flamanville 3 had begun conducting divergence operations, a crucial step in establishing a stable nuclear reaction.
The French nuclear safety authority, ASN, reported that the shutdown on Wednesday was due to a “human error.” EDF acknowledged the complexity of starting up the EPR, indicating that further automatic shutdowns may occur as the process continues. Reactors of the same design have successfully been completed in China and Finland, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced in France.
Despite the setbacks, EDF received approval from ASN on Monday to initiate the fission reaction, having loaded uranium fuel into the reactor back in May. The Flamanville plant is set to gradually increase its output to 25 percent before connecting to the grid, a revised timeline pushing its operational target from late summer to late autumn.
Once fully operational, the Flamanville 3 reactor is projected to be France’s highest-producing nuclear facility, generating 1,600 megawatts of power. This output could potentially supply electricity to around three million homes, reinforcing France’s commitment to nuclear energy as a key component of its energy strategy.
